appearance: Standing at about 5' 8" and weighing around 120 pounds Melissa has the build of a supermodel, and boy does she know it! Though her sense of style is modest and she's a bit of a tomboy, Melissa goes for the odd dress every now and again. Though her makeup is natural and non-time consuming, she secretly enjoys having girl time as much as the next female. Usually a quick brush through and shaking of her curls will do as she flies out the door, most likely shoving her money into her jeans pocket. If there's one girl thing Mel hates it would definitely be carrying a purse around all the time, so she doesn't.
She tries to dress pretty simply, but occasionally something special will catch her eye and she won’t be able to resist buying it. With simple, fairly modest tastes, Melissa still isn’t against splurging on a great find every now and then. A favourite shopping pastime of hers is called ‘Like a Moviestar’, where she tries to come up with the outrageous outfits only the Hollywood-ers wear. She usually ends up finding at least one surprising piece she likes from such adventures, and the fun is all in the surprise. Dresses aren’t really Melissa’s thing at all; she’s much fonder of jeans than frills. However when the opportunity cannot be escaped -or is too good to pass up- she throws herself into finding the perfect one with an enthusiasm comparable to the effects of coffee on her.
personality: Melissa is a quieter type and she generally avoids conflicts at all costs. A deeply complex individual she shares only what she wants to, with only whom she wants to at the time of her choosing. She is strongly intuitive, and trusts those instincts above all else. In addition to this she is very sensitive to the feelings of others, and is the one people would come to when they need someone to lend an ear.
In spite of her aversion to conflict once one such does occur she is a force to be reckoned with. Like she does with everything else Melissa will give a fight 110% of what she's got. And if she is defending someone else well, that just makes her fight that much harder. She is a girl who's vocabulary doesn't contain the words 'give up', and she doesn't intend to learn them now.
Despite being an only child Melissa likes sharing her things with people. The only real exceptions to this rule are her car and her boyfriend. This could cause her to be shamelessly used by someone less kind but until it does her generosity will continue. While on the outside she appears to be city born (ie. appearance – she dresses that way to fit in-, street smarts) the girl’s mannerisms reflect her true country born origins. A simpler soul, Melissa has learned to appreciate the simpler things in life, and is proud of her small, random talents.
Because of her intuition Melissa always believes that she is right, leading her to ignore the opinions of others. With a very strong value system she has discovered that she needs to live her life by those values or risk breaking down completely. Melissa is a very patient and protective type of person who defends those she cares about with a vengeance. On that note, she does tend to hold back part of herself in her relationships, trying to protect herself from harm. Once you're through her defenses she's your friend for life, but until then she's as dangerous as poison.

powers:
- Poison Generation - The bodily ability to generate any poison within the body and secrete it through the pores or through the air by exhaling it from the mouth and nostrils. This power also grants Melissa immunity to all poisons and toxins. So far she is able to produce only two types of poisons/toxins. These are hydrogen cyanide and potassium chloride, and she is only able to produce these in vapour form at this time. As it is, once she has used all the poison she is capable of she must rehydrate and wait for her body to make more, leaving her vulnerable for periods of time after she uses this ability.
- Power Negation - The ability to effectively cancel another mutant/s powers. Right now Melissa is subconciously weakening the powers of anyone within 10 feet of her by about 25%. As well, though her mind is completely protected at this time her body is not and if someone were to say throw boulders at her from 20 feet away using elemental powers her power negation would have no effect whatsoever. In time she may eventually be able to stop the powers of an entire room full of people, or long distance powers (ie. telepathy, boulders being thrown at her etc).
power levels:
- Poison Generation - 4
- Power Negation - 4
strengths:
- will - when Melissa sets her mind to something she will give it everything she has. She's never heard of holding back, and she doesn't intend to start now.
- compassion - her ability to care for complete strangers, making her gain friends in unexpected places has saved Melissa more than once on the road.
- intuition - the instinctive knowledge Melissa possesses has definitely played a role in her survival so far. When there is a situation that doesn't feel quite right more often than not she will go with her gut feeling and react accordingly.
- ethics - this girl plays by her own rules, and though generally they are set in stone there are a few she is being forced to re-evaluate....Exhibit A: Thou shalt not kill. 'Nuff said.
weaknesses:
- ruled by her own emotions - in stressful situations, Melissa often lets her fear take over, controlling her actions. This makes her a major danger to not only others but also herself. Since there isn't even a pause for thought her following actions can easily cause herself unintentional harm.
- over thinks simple situations/decisions - from something as innocent and simple as someone offering to hold the door open for her to someone who offers her a place to stay, Mel is prone to over thinking the situation, analyzing every detail and trying to come up with an ulterior motive beneath the person's actions.
- avoids all contact with men - thanks to her recent past Melissa isn't comfortable with the male gender at all. Perhaps some remembrance of her father and uncle remain but they are so deeply buried they are almost nonexistent.
habits:
- late night run - Melissa has continued this tradition she and her father began when they had been training for a local marathon. Her reasons for running now have changed though, and she now does it go gain perspective and to have an outlet for all of her new stress and anger.
- obsessive cleaner - Melissa always leaves a room cleaner than it was when she entered. Because Mel had to leave behind many of her possessions she takes very good care of the things she still has with her.
- keep moving - since her father's death she hasn't stayed in one place longer than a few weeks. In the beginning it felt safer so she still keeps moving even if she is actually safe.
- nervousness - when she's unsure or nervous a whole plethera of habits become apparent in Melissa's behaviour. Everything from biting her lip, to pacing, to chewing her nails.
goals:
- stay in one place for longer than a few weeks
- find out who her mother is and where she is
- to fully understand and be able to control her powers
- make a home for herself (eventually)
secret:
- she is secretly terrified of men after what happened with Gerald. This is something she wishes she could overcome, but as of right now is powerless to do anything about.
- isn't sure whether or not she actually wants to learn who her mother is now. She isn't sure whether she needs anyone at all anymore.

father: Ian Bennett.
siblings: No full siblings. Possibly half siblings.
significant other (s): None.
pets: A painted turtle named Roxy.
heritage: Canadian.
hometown: Littletown.
history: Raised by a single parent -her father- Melissa was never told who her mother is, so it’s still a mystery to this day for her. She had a very happy childhood, spending most of her time with her father, who was her best friend. Since he was a football (the English kind) fanatic, a love of the sport was instilled in her at an early age. On a few special occasions the two even got to see professional league matches, and these are among Melissa’s fondest memories of her father.
Her dad would also have game nights, usually with a few of his co-workers coming over to their house. One such co-worker and friend, named Gerald was a regular visitor or guest in their house. When she first met him as a child, Melissa was slightly scared and more than a little creeped out by the way the man, who was named Gerald, seemed to be overly friendly to her. Nothing happened however, and she gradually learned to avoid being alone with him, and to ignore him when Ian left the room. That ‘nothing’ changed to something though, a few weeks after she turned seventeen…
After coming home from school that day, Melissa had made herself the usual sandwich, pausing long enough to make one for her father as well. He would be home soon, and she liked being able to do things to help him. After taking a bite or two of her sandwich there was a knock at the door, and upon opening it Melissa saw Gerald. “Hey honey, I just stopped by to pick up that drill your dad’s lending me. I think it’s in the garage?” Remembering her father had said he was lending the drill to Gerald, she opened the door and let the man into the garage, going back to eating her sandwich as she had been before. A few minutes later, Gerald’s voice called her name, asking for some help to find the missing tool. As she entered the garage, a large pair of hands closed the door behind her and grabbed her shoulders, pushing her against the wall. Gerald’s voice suddenly cackled in her ear. “Come on girly, we’re going to have some fun! You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for this!” As she screamed and struggled against the larger man, he began trying to remove her clothes. Unfortunately her scratching and biting didn’t appear to have an effect, so disgustingly distracted was he. Just as Melissa was starting to tire she felt something well up uncontrollably inside her, like a volcano exploding inside her chest. Within seconds there was a strange scent in the air, and suddenly Gerald fell off of her onto the floor, choking and spasming. Within a minute the large man was completely still. There wasn’t even any motion showing his breathing, but Melissa was too upset to notice that. Immediately she called an ambulance and the police in hysterics, but it was too late; Gerald was dead. And she had killed him.
The police were baffled at first as to Gerald’s COD, however they soon discovered that Gerald had died due to hydrogen cyanide poisoning. They only became suspicious again upon discovering no traces of hydrogen cyanide in either Melissa’s system or the garage. After things had settled a little bit Melissa told her father everything. Soon enough it was chalked up to a mysterious circumstance thanks to a lack of evidence Confessing to him relieved a huge burden that Mel hadn’t even been aware she’d been carrying, since she hadn’t told the police or anyone else what had actually taken place.
Ian and Melissa continued with their lives, trying to pretend things were normal, however that had become completely impossible. The incident hung between them, and both knew that things would never be the same again. Melissa had begun thinking more and more about the unknown side of her family, wondering if perhaps they could bring some balance back into her life. Unfortunately when she asked Ian, he told her that he knew almost nothing about her mother -including her whereabouts- and that it was very possible that Melissa was one of the ‘mutants’ shown recently on the news.
She has since been having an identity crisis as she’s searched for her mother, trying to understand this unknown part of herself while afraid of herself. The fact that Ian himself seemed afraid of her –or what she is capable of– didn’t help her either. Eventually she gave up and left, wandering from one place to the next for several months in a fruitless search while her father helped her as best as he knew how. Eventually it came to his attention that there was a school for teenagers like Melissa and he has sent her there in the hopes that she will come back better than when she left. Sadly, a few weeks after she was listed as a student there her father was in a car accident and died a few days later. Melissa is beginning to doubt that she will be able to keep going like this.[/ul]
